Bank of Granite Corp. may be small, but that doesn't mean it's not into new technology.

In 1997, the Granite Falls-based bank was among the first to return images of canceled checks to customers (instead of the actual checks), and now it is ready to unveil another innovation: e-statements.

To customers who sign up for the service, the bank will e-mail statements that look like print-outs and contain images of their checks.

The bank has been testing the service with employees for about two months and sees "significant" cost savings if it's successful, said Chief Information Officer Mark Stephens. That's because printed statements require envelope stuffing and postage.

"We pride ourselves on old-fashioned service, but as far as new technology, we have been pretty progressive," Stephens said.

He said the bank has a sizable potential audience for the statements: its 4,000 online banking customers, about 10 percent of its customer base. The bank plans to send e-mails about the service to those customers in coming weeks, and highlight the option on its Web site.
